Wayne Gretzky as Coach
Thanks to Kukla’s Korner, there is a nice piece in the New York Times that features Phoenix Coyotes head coach Wayne Gretzky. I’m certain that the Coyotes were featured in the Times in preparation for their swing through the Atlantic Division as they face the Islanders, the New Jersey Devils, and the New York Rangers this week.
From the article, and what we know locally, it is clear that Gretzky chose to coach here and with this young team. He could do anything else but doesn’t want to do anything else.
The measure of a player and of a coach is how one makes changes based on the personnel of the team in front of him, and what he can do with the players he has. Many felt (and most likely do) that the Coyotes will not amount to much. However, they have surprised some people and are on the right track to do more.
