Phoenix Coyotes Trade Dennis Seidenberg

The Phoenix Coyotes trade defenseman Dennis Seidenberg to the Carolina Hurricanes for center Kevyn Adams this morning.

CasonBlog has his thoughts about Adams as a player and what the Hurricanes get is a defenseman who had limited ice time due to the surprises of Travis Roche and Matt Jones. It’s pretty funny that Michael Barnett took his advice and found a way to get Adams away from the Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes were down to five healthy defensemen because of injuries and needed a healthy player. Seidenberg will help the overall team, but by how much remains to be seen. In 34 games last year with the Coyotes, Seidenberg had 11 points (one goal, ten assists) with a -9 rating. He hadn’t found his way into the lineup for the past two weeks and he has not been spectacular or a liability. He only has 2 points so far this season with a -4 rating. However, the trade moreso was a question of what the Hurricanes needed and we had too many defensemen in our lineup.

With Kevyn Adams, he has not played to his potential so far this season, or to where I have seen him play during his Stanley Cup run. He just couldn’t get anything started and has essentially underachieved to the point of being a liability for his team.

He is currently a -10 with only four points (two goals and two assists) and it has been his worst year so far in a Carolina Hurricanes uniform, and the worst year statistically in his career. Not since the 2002-2003 season has he put up these kinds of numbers with the Hurricanes.

During the playoffs, I saw how Kevyn Adams played the game and appreciated his uptempo, hit anything, energy type of play he provided. I hope that style returns so that he can help the Coyotes succeed.

I think the trade helps the Hurricanes more short term than long term, but I do hope Adams will fit in here. Maybe he just needs a new start.

Heaping Praise on the Coyotes

Paying off the first part of the wager, CasonBlog has a very nice post about the brilliance of the Coyotes last night.

Who needs the mainstream media when there are top quality writers composing distinctive articles about their love for the game and for their teams? (Well, in this case the article here is about the Coyotes, but his work is always top notch when it comes to the Carolina Hurricanes.)

The Atlanta Thrashers are next.

Curtis Joseph Earns Win 438 in Shutout Against ‘Canes

The Phoenix Coyotes get their third shut out in six games and have gained 11 out of 12 possible points since their victory over the Anaheim Ducks on December 23.

When the Coyotes have scored first in the last five games, they have picked up a point and Thursday night’s game was no exception.

The Coyotes were able to hang on and win the game.

Joseph, with his 438th win, now moves past legendary Jacques Plante in the all-time win list for NHL goaltenders. The next player ahead of him is Terry Sawchuk who won 447 games in his career.

The Coyotes have been on a remarkable run where they have picked off the elite teams in the NHL with the Anaheim Ducks and the San Jose Sharks, and now they can add the Stanley Cup Champions to that list.

Besides Curtis Joseph, there were other players that made a significant impact to the game. Mike Zigomanis was 9-14 from the face-off circle with five shots on goal. He was traded to the St. Louis Blues last year from the Carolina Hurricanes, so he had something to prove to his former team. I would have been bitter myself if I was traded away from winning or having a chance to win the Stanley Cup.

Owen Nolan continues to be a force on the ice for his hockey club by adding his 15th assist of the year.

Keith Ballard consistently steps up to the challenge by facing the opposing team’s top skaters each and every night. He works extremely hard to give the goaltender what he needs to be successful. Ballard plays this game the right way and it’s exciting to see.

Perreault continues his renaissance with his new team by continuing to score goals at key moments of hockey games.

The journey for the Coyotes continues its tough road as they travel south to Atlanta to meet the very physical Atlanta Thrashers.

I’ll preview the game tomorrow after CasonBlog shares his thoughts on the Phoenix Coyotes. :-)
