One Fan’s Perspective 3.0?

After the demise of the Coyotes from their playoff run, I had to take a break from hockey.  Primarily because of life issues (once again), but as a secondary reason – I just don’t like the Red Wings.

As I chastise others about being just a tad too obsessive about sports, I took my own advice.

Therapy (in a pure figurative sense, not the literal one) works.

So, after much thought about what I want to do in terms of writing, I came up with the following of what this blog will now become.

I used to write about game previews and game recaps, and unless it’s something special, I’ll no longer do that on a regular basis.  The are other Coyotes blogs that do that kind of lifting, and have a strong following now.  Click on the Hockey Blogs tab at the top of the page – I have them all listed there.

Instead, my contribution to the Coyotes universe of blog writing will most likely focus on an angle the others have not written about.  If I think I’m writing a “me too” type of post, I’ll delete the draft and not publish it.

I’m still leaving open the possibility of focusing on the other aspects of the blog (which at the top still reads: One fan’s perspective on the Phoenix Coyotes, the NHL, and the Sports Industry).  I do have other interests.  But when the season gets cranked up again, we’ll see what happens.

Finally, I plan on writing, at the bare minimum, once per week.  That is, if I have anything to say.  Once upon a time, I was the only Coyotes blog writing about the woeful happenings in the desert – with the sheer optimism that things will get better down here.  They have, and provided the transaction with the new ownership group becomes finalized, they will improve.  At the time, I did have a sense of pride that for awhile there, I was the only one with a hockey blog about the Phoenix Coyotes.  Now, there are several.  All very good.

I’ve always written that life is more important than hockey, and certainly that’s true with me as well.  Last summer I couldn’t mourn with others about the potential loss of the franchise, and again this summer I’ve been away and missed out on the changes (both player and front office) that our franchise has seen.  Hopefully, these changes will be for the better.

So, we’ll see what happens.  When I started, I always thought I would write something about hockey every day.  I also primarily wrote for me, and was pleasantly surprised when others enjoyed what I wrote.  It’s time to return to that perspective without worrying about the timeliness of anything.  I’ll write what I think is interesting to consider.  If I find nothing…then…well, I won’t.

Even though this is not “I’m stopping forever” kind of deal, I will only say that I’m glad I got to meet some of you in cyberspace.  Hopefully, we’ll meet in person some day.  I’ll buy the first round (one at a time though, like because if we meet as a group, I’m not buying for everyone…well…it depends on how large the group is).

New Feature

I just found out last night that I can post to my blog from e-mail. Not too terribly exciting for anyone else, but I thought it was sort of cool.

So that’s the reason for this particular message. I might delete it later.

I wanted to see how it worked. ;-)

The Unfortunate Summer

If you have come back here (or if you are new), you might have notice some prolific writing (some good and some not) from 2007 ish to 2008.

And then, the entire last season has vanished from the blog.  Well, there are reasons for that.

First off, during last season, I referenced my sojourn through graduate school that heavily conflicted with my full time job, and my overall life.  Before then, I watched and completely consumed hockey.  I followed multiple teams, read multiple blogs, and found myself immersed into the hockey culture we love.

Then, I had to take a break.  Life was just too difficult then.

Then, my busiest summer academically occurred and the next thing I knew, the Phoenix Coyotes were in bankruptcy court.  Unfortunately, I couldn’t keep up and honestly, I was pretty bummed about the entire ordeal.  Usually, my day job is much slower in the summer – in the past, I could have joined the other Coyotes’ bloggers in their pursuit of the truth (and commiserating in the despair), but I just had to watch from the sidelines and wonder.

Thanks to Save the Coyotes, Five for Howling, and to Hip Shot Blog, I was able to keep up albeit from the sidelines.

Next, when I decided to come back, after my summer of hell was complete, I went to my site, only to find a 500 internal server error.  I called the support service of my hosting company and they stated that there was a .php error.  Many early readers knew that I was a video freak – I liked embedding the scenes of what I was talking about.  Some I took from YouTube, and others I took from elsewhere.  Most likely, it contributed to the internal combustion of the blog as well as to my potential burnout.  I liked showing the video and Panger’s breakdown of what happened.  That will happen much less often this time around, keeping things simple as they say.

So, the only recourse I had was to delete the blog since I had no way to get in and I had no idea how to fix the .php issues I had.  Of course, I didn’t back up anything, and I lost the entire last season.  That’s the way it goes I guess.  It’s not like there was that much there to begin with anyway.

When I started, I was the only one.  Out there in NHL land, I was kicked around pretty good by the average fan, saying that hockey doesn’t work here, Coyotes are not good, and I’m an idiot for following them.  It seems that others are too – par for the course, really.  But when I was far removed from hockey, these other writers took up the charge and held on for dear life.  Even though I wasn’t writing about hockey or the Coyotes, I was reading – feeling the despair and angry about it the whole way.

So, I’m back, just in a different role.  I’ll leave the game previews and the game recaps to the others.  Five for Howling and the community over there does a masterful job with it.  I’ll just add my perspective, here and there, just like the blog title says.
